Everton’s Idrissa Gueye loses appeal over red card in Man Utd clash

Everton’s appeal against Idrissa Gueye’s red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane during Monday’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United has been rejected, manager David Moyes confirmed on Friday.
The 36-year-old Senegal international was sent off in the 13th minute following a confrontation with Keane, leaving Everton with 10 men for most of the match. Despite the early setback, Everton made history by becoming the first team to win a Premier League game at Old Trafford after being reduced to 10 players, thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s superb 29th-minute goal.
Gueye will now serve a three-match suspension, missing league fixtures against Newcastle United, Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest.
“We appealed, and our appeal was turned down. We haven’t been given any specific reason, but the appeal was made immediately,” Moyes told reporters ahead of Saturday’s home game against Newcastle.
“It was over quickly, and we moved on within the dressing room. We want passion from our players. We don’t always want it expressed like it was on Monday, but commitment and drive are what we value.”
The incident was only the third in Premier League history where a player was sent off for an altercation with a teammate and the first since 2008, when Stoke City’s Ricardo Fuller slapped Andy Griffin during a match at West Ham United.
Moyes added that Gueye had apologised for the incident, both in the dressing room and on social media, and that there were some positive takeaways from the situation.
Everton currently sit 11th in the Premier League with 18 points from 12 matches.
