The San Francisco 49ers improved to 8-4 on the season with a 20-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night, highlighted by running back Christian McCaffrey’s 143 total yards and a touchdown.

Carolina, which had a chance to claim sole possession of the NFC South with a win, falls to 6-6. McCaffrey, the NFL’s leader in scrimmage yards, now has 1,439 yards on the season along with 12 total touchdowns.

“It was a great win,” McCaffrey said. “But I know we’re hungry for more, and I know we can be better.”

First Half: Turnovers Dominate

The first half was a turnover-heavy affair. San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy threw three interceptions on 14-of-23 passing for 114 yards. Two of those picks came at the hands of cornerback Jaycee Horn, the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback briefly earlier this offseason—a move that paid off.

Despite the miscues, Purdy connected with Jauan Jennings for a touchdown, his eighth of the season and Jennings’ fourth.

Carolina’s Bryce Young struggled as well. After driving to the San Francisco goal line, Young threw an interception in the end zone, his seventh of the season, while Ji’Ayir Brown recorded the fourth interception of his career.

The scoring in the first half included Ryan Fitzgerald’s 25-yard field goal for the Panthers and Matt Gay’s 47-yarder for the 49ers. San Francisco outgained Carolina 180-72 in total yards and controlled the clock, running 39 plays compared to Carolina’s 19. The Niners also committed zero penalties and recorded 13 first downs versus Carolina’s three, with neither team posting a sack.

Second Half: McCaffrey Leads 49ers to Victory

San Francisco opened the second half with a 12-yard touchdown run from McCaffrey, capping a 13-play, 80-yard drive and extending their lead to 17-3.

Carolina responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tetairoa McMillan, but a failed two-point conversion left them trailing 17-9.

The 49ers added a field goal in the fourth quarter to go up 20-9. Carolina had another chance to narrow the gap, but Brown intercepted Young for the second time, sealing the game.
