David Neres’ first-half brace fires Napoli past Atalanta

Napoli cruised to a 3–1 victory over Atalanta in Raffaele Palladino’s first match in charge of La Dea, leaving the Bergamo side with just one win from their first six Serie A away games (W1, D3, L2) for the first time since the 2017/18 season.
The match marked a fresh start for Atalanta, who parted ways with former manager Ivan Jurić during the international break after a disappointing start to the campaign. However, a punishing first-half display by Napoli quickly extinguished any optimism among the visiting fans.
After a balanced opening, David Neres broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a clinical close-range finish, putting Napoli ahead. Despite dominating possession, Atalanta struggled to create meaningful chances before the break, their efforts largely limited to wayward shots from distance.
Neres doubled his tally in the 38th minute, expertly finishing a low pass from Scott McTominay, putting Napoli firmly in control. On the stroke of halftime, Napoli struck again: Giovanni Di Lorenzo delivered a precise left-footed cross to the back post, where Noa Lang rose to head home, giving the hosts a commanding 3–0 lead from just their third shot on target.
Atalanta responded early in the second half, with Gianluca Scamacca’s expertly struck volley in the 52nd minute offering a glimmer of hope. The visitors briefly took the momentum, with Charles De Ketelaere testing the crossbar and Vanja Milinković-Savić tipping Scamacca’s low effort away.
Napoli, however, regained composure thanks to tactical adjustments, ultimately seeing out the match to claim all three points.
The victory temporarily propels Napoli back to the top of the Serie A table and extends their unbeaten home run to 17 league games. Remarkably, they remain the only side in Europe’s top five leagues yet to suffer a home defeat in 2025.
For Atalanta, the result extends their winless streak to eight league games (D5, L3), their worst run since a 14-match drought in 2015/16, leaving the club with plenty of work to do under new management.
