A complete guide to the European play-offs for the 2026 World Cup

With four European spots still up for grabs at the 2026 World Cup, the continent’s play-offs are set to be more intense—and more important—than ever. Although European nations have long battled through play-offs to reach the tournament, the expanded 2026 format has added even more weight to these decisive matches.
Here’s a full breakdown of how the play-offs work, which teams are involved, and what to expect in the coming months.
How do the European Play-Offs work?
A total of 16 nations qualified for the European Play-Offs. These include:
12 runners-up from the World Cup qualifying groups.
4 additional teams selected based on the latest Nations League rankings, provided they did not finish in the top two of their qualifying group.
These 16 teams were placed into four pots:
Pots 1–3 were based on the FIFA World Rankings.
Pot 4 consisted solely of the teams that entered via the Nations League.
One team from each pot was drawn into each of the four play-off paths.
Within every path:
The Pot 1 team faces the Pot 4 team in a one-legged semi-final.
The Pot 2 team faces the Pot 3 team in the other semi-final.
Winners advance to a single-match final, where the victor secures a place at the 2026 World Cup.
Pot 1 and Pot 2 nations host the semi-finals, while the draw determines who hosts each final.

All semi-finals: March 26
All finals: March 31
The four losing semi-finalists in each path will also play friendly matches on the day of the finals.
Every match is single-legged. If a game is level after 90 minutes, extra time—and, if necessary, a penalty shootout—will decide the winner.
Kick-off times for each match will be confirmed after the draw.
When was the draw held?
The European Play-Off draw took place in Switzerland on November 20th.
Just before it, FIFA conducted the separate draw for the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament, which features six teams from outside Europe competing for the final two World Cup berths.
