Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad due to ongoing fitness concerns, ruling him out of Monday’s decisive FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The defender had already missed Friday’s 1-1 draw against Poland and, after further assessment, has now returned to his club. The KNVB did not specify the nature of Dumfries’ injury.

In Dumfries’ absence, Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida started at right-back in Warsaw, though his performance drew criticism, leaving manager Ronald Koeman with a selection dilemma ahead of the group finale against Lithuania.

Dumfries becomes the third player to withdraw from Ronald Koeman’s squad this week, following Ajax striker Wout Weghorst, who pulled out through injury, and Burnley’s Quilindschy Hartman, who left due to illness.

Despite the setbacks, the Netherlands remain in a strong position to secure their place at the 2026 World Cup. A draw on Monday at the Johan Cruyff ArenA would be enough to seal qualification, with the Dutch three points ahead of Poland and holding a significant goal-difference advantage (+19 to Poland’s +6).
