Calhanoglu Shines as Impressive Turkey Sweep Bulgaria Aside in Bursa

Turkey took another decisive step toward securing second place in their FIFA World Cup qualifying group with a composed 2-0 victory over Bulgaria in Bursa, leaving the 1994 World Cup semi-finalists still without a point in this qualification campaign.
As expected, the hosts seized control from the opening whistle. Abdulkerim Bardakcı and Kerem Aktürkoğlu both went close early on, and it was Aktürkoğlu who forced the breakthrough after 16 minutes. Brought down by Kristian Dimitrov just outside the penalty arc, he won a free kick in prime Hakan Çalhanoğlu territory. The Inter midfielder’s initial effort struck the wall, but a handball by Hristiyan Petrov gifted him a second chance from the spot. Çalhanoğlu converted with trademark composure, sending Dimitar Mitov the wrong way to record his 22nd international goal on his 102nd appearance.
Much like their dominant 6-1 win over Bulgaria last month, Turkey continued to dictate play. Aktürkoğlu remained a constant threat, first forcing Mitov into a stretching save after a clever Çalhanoğlu pass, then firing tamely at the goalkeeper just before the interval after Kenan Yıldız squared across goal.
Despite Bulgaria staring at an eighth defeat in nine internationals this calendar year, head coach Aleksandar Dimitrov resisted any changes at the break. The second half began in similar fashion, with Aktürkoğlu twice unable to turn in promising crosses from Zeki Çelik.
Bulgaria nearly grabbed a shock equaliser moments later, however, when Georgi Rusev unleashed a powerful long-range strike that beat Uğurcan Çakır but crashed off the far post.
Yıldız, looking to score in a third consecutive November international window, came close with a weaving solo run midway through the half, only to drag his effort just past the post.
Turkey’s decisive second goal arrived courtesy of more Bulgarian misfortune. Çalhanoğlu delivered a teasing free kick toward the far post, where defender Atanas Chernev, under pressure from Samet Akaydın, inadvertently turned the ball beyond Mitov to seal the result on just his second international appearance.
The hosts managed the closing stages with ease, but with Spain victorious in Tbilisi, only an extraordinary result in La Roja’s home fixture would allow Turkey to seize top spot and claim an automatic ticket to North America next summer. A playoff route in March remains the most likely scenario for the 2002 World Cup bronze medallists.
For Bulgaria, the outlook is far gloomier. A fifth defeat in six meetings with Turkey leaves them with one last chance to avoid their first winless World Cup qualifying campaign in 72 years.
