Alex de Minaur admits to being in a dark place after painful loss to Lorenzo Musetti

Alex de Minaur was left devastated after surrendering a winning position in a crushing defeat to Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, admitting he “can’t go on failing this way” after another painful collapse.
The Australian fought back impressively from a set down to force a decider and led 5-3 in the final set, only for Musetti to rally and win four consecutive games, sealing a dramatic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 victory in Turin.
“I think it’s probably a good thing I don’t express my feelings right now because they’re quite dark,” De Minaur said after the match. “It just feels like it’s been that type of year where I’ve had so many matches that should have gone my way and just somehow don’t.”
The loss continues a frustrating pattern for the world No. 11, who has repeatedly found himself on the wrong side of tight contests this season. At the U.S. Open in September, he won the opening set against Felix Auger-Aliassime before bowing out in his sixth Grand Slam quarter-final. Earlier at Wimbledon, he dominated the first set 6-1 against Novak Djokovic before eventually succumbing again.
“It’s something that, if it doesn’t get sorted, it’s going to eat me alive,” De Minaur admitted. “I need to get it sorted sooner rather than later. I don’t know how many more times I can deal with a loss like this.”
The defeat to Musetti followed another tough opening match loss to Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday in the Jimmy Connors Group. De Minaur now faces Taylor Fritz, last year’s finalist, in his final round-robin match on Thursday — a must-win to stay in contention.
Asked what he can do to avoid repeating such collapses, De Minaur said he plans to meet with his coaching team to find solutions.
“Just have a talk to my team and try to sort out these issues because they can’t keep happening,” he said. “If I really want to be serious about taking the next step in my career, these matches — I can’t lose them. I just can’t.”
