Union Berlin were left frustrated as they missed the chance to secure their first-ever competitive victory over Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga leaders clawing back to earn a 2-2 draw, ending Bayern’s 16-game winning streak.

Bayern started sluggishly in the capital, perhaps feeling the effects of their energy-draining 10-man victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Union came close to taking an early lead in the opening 10 minutes, only for Ilyas Ansah’s header to be ruled out for offside. However, neither technology nor luck could save Bayern when Manuel Neuer made a rare mistake to gift Union the opener just before the half-hour mark.

The experienced goalkeeper appeared set to gather Danilho Doekhi’s low shot from Janik Haberer’s corner, but the ball slipped through his hands and crossed the line, giving the hosts the lead.

Neuer, no doubt relieved, soon witnessed Luis Diaz’s brilliance restore parity before the break. The former Liverpool winger showed persistence to keep the ball in play, danced past Haberer, and unleashed a fierce strike from a tight angle that beat Frederik Ronnow.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Bayern threatened to take the lead before halftime, with Diaz firing wide and Harry Kane seeing a tap-in ruled out for offside.

After the restart, Vincent Kompany’s side continued to press, with Michael Olise forcing a crucial low save from Ronnow to keep Bayern at bay.

Union eventually regained the lead in the 82nd minute against the run of play. Kane’s weak defensive header from a free-kick allowed Doekhi to slot a composed left-foot finish into the bottom corner.

Yet Kane redeemed himself in stoppage time, perfectly timing his run to meet Tom Bischof’s cross and nod Bayern level, securing his 13th league goal of the season and rescuing a point for the visitors.

While Bayern’s 100% record was halted, they maintain a six-point lead at the top ahead of the international break. Union Berlin, meanwhile, remain in 10th place under Steffen Baumgart.
