Tommy Fleetwood continued his strong form on Friday to head into the weekend of the Abu Dhabi Championship tied for the lead with fellow Englishman Aaron Rai.

Fleetwood began his second round in style, firing three consecutive birdies and carding a total of seven to post a six-under 66, moving to 14-under for the tournament. The two-time former winner and reigning FedEx Cup champion started the day in a five-way share of the lead but soon surged ahead, catching early starter Nacho Elvira.

Fleetwood’s only bogey came at the 15th, though he quickly recovered on the next hole with a 12-foot putt. “Really good day. I got off to the perfect start. Birdie, birdie, birdie,” Fleetwood said. “It’s always tough to follow up a good round with another strong one, so this was satisfying.”

Rai matched Fleetwood shot-for-shot, highlighted by an albatross at the par-five second hole. “I caught it clean off the face, the line was perfect, and it chased its way down. We couldn’t see it from the fairway, so it was a nice surprise,” he said. Rai added five more birdies to finish with an eight-under 64, equaling Fleetwood at the top of the leaderboard.

Two shots behind, Richard Sterne, Andy Sullivan, and Nicolai Hojgaard lead the chasing pack. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry, who matched Ryder Cup teammate Fleetwood on Thursday, slipped back with consecutive bogeys to post a three-under 69. Rory McIlroy is six shots off the lead after a four-under 68, with Matt Fitzpatrick and Robert McIntyre another stroke back.
