Man City ease past Dortmund with goals from Haaland, Foden and Cherki

Manchester City recorded a sixth win in their last seven competitive games with a commanding 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), extending their unbeaten run against German opposition to nine matches.
Dortmund surprised many by attempting to dictate play at the Etihad from the outset, but City’s clinical counter-attacking approach soon caused them problems. Phil Foden tested Gregor Kobel with a 25-yard drive, only for Savinho to blaze the rebound over, before Foden doubled his efforts ten minutes later. Finding space in a dangerous pocket courtesy of Tijjani Reijnders, the England international swept a precise shot into the bottom corner to give City the lead.
Erling Haaland, as ever, made his mark just before the half-hour. Jeremy Doku recycled Savinho’s initial cross to find the unmarked Norwegian, who powered a shot from 10 yards into the net for his customary UCL goal. Dortmund offered little in response in the first half, though Karim Adeyemi did test Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low drive off the right flank.
Foden added his second in similar fashion early in the second half, curling home from 20 yards into the bottom-left corner to put City firmly in control. The hosts dominated possession and came close to a fourth when Foden’s cross found Savinho at the back post, but the Brazilian’s volley flew over.
Dortmund made it 3-1 late on when a quick free-kick allowed Julian Ryerson to tee up Waldemar Anton for a near-post finish, but John Stones quickly denied Adeyemi a chance to close the gap further.
Pep Guardiola’s side sealed the scoring in stoppage time, with substitute Rayan Cherki finishing neatly to make it 4-1. The result also extended City’s unbeaten streak in UCL home group-stage matches to 23 games.
