Aston Villa Club Captain John McGinn Signs New Contract at Villa Park Until 2028

Since arriving at Villa Park in 2018 for what proved to be a bargain £2.5 million fee from Hibernian, John McGinn has become one of Aston Villa’s most influential figures. Under manager Unai Emery, the Scottish international has risen to the role of club captain and established himself as a true leader both on and off the pitch.
Interest in McGinn was firmly rejected during the summer transfer window, and reports earlier this month hinted that Villa were preparing to reward his commitment with a new long-term deal. That news has now been confirmed, with the club announcing that McGinn has signed a new contract keeping him at Villa Park until 2028.
“Aston Villa is delighted to announce that Club Captain John McGinn has signed a new contract with the club,” read the official statement.
“McGinn has been a stalwart in the Villa line-up since joining from Hibernian in 2018 and has played a key role in the club’s rise from the Championship to the Champions League.
With over 80 caps for Scotland, he also sits fifth on his country’s list of all-time goalscorers.”
Now 31, McGinn is closing in on a potential World Cup appearance with Scotland and remains central to Villa’s ambitions of securing another European qualification under Emery this season.
Having made over 300 appearances for the club, McGinn has cemented his place as a cult hero among supporters. Only 35 players in Villa’s long history have reached that milestone — a testament to his consistency, loyalty, and leadership. The new deal only further confirms his status as a modern-day Aston Villa legend.
