The final day of the YoHealth Malta Premier Opening Round produced high drama as Hibernians threw away a two-goal lead to finish outside the Top Six, while Birkirkara — despite losing 2–0 to Ħamrun Spartans — secured the final berth thanks to Marsaxlokk’s spirited comeback.

For long spells, it looked as though Gianluca Festa’s Birkirkara were heading for the Bottom Six after finding themselves two goals down to the champions, while Hibernians were comfortably leading Marsaxlokk 2–0. But a stunning turnaround in the second half saw Marsaxlokk earn a 2–2 draw despite being reduced to ten men, a result that pushed Birkirkara into sixth place and left Hibernians in the Bottom Six.

Ħamrun in Control, Birkirkara Fall Short

Ħamrun Spartans once again demonstrated their quality and depth, outplaying Birkirkara for most of the match at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The champions took the lead after 11 minutes when Emerson Marcelina pounced on a rebound following Ryan Camenzuli’s strike against the post.

The Spartans doubled their advantage on 22 minutes when Semar Smajlagic converted a penalty after a handball by Stephan Makoma. The Stripes struggled to respond, with their only real chance coming late in the first half when Henry Bonello denied Marcos Maydana.

After the break, Birkirkara continued to labour in attack, rarely troubling the Spartans’ backline. Ħamrun were reduced to ten men deep into stoppage time when Kurt Zammit was sent off, but by then the result was sealed — and the Stripes’ Top Six hopes seemed in tatters.

However, news soon filtered through that Marsaxlokk had drawn against Hibernians, sparking celebrations on the Birkirkara bench.

Marsaxlokk’s Comeback Stuns Hibernians

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Hibernians looked in complete control after a quick-fire brace from Lucas Villela put them 2–0 up inside 28 minutes. When Marsaxlokk had goalkeeper Christoffer Mafoumbi sent off just before half-time, the Paolites appeared destined for victory.

But Marsaxlokk refused to give in. Despite being a man down, they halved the deficit in the 70th minute when Pedro Cacho deflected the ball into his own net, before Juvhel Tsoumou — scoring for the second consecutive match — struck a dramatic equaliser ten minutes from time.

Hibernians’ frustration boiled over in stoppage time when Dexter Xuereb was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, sealing a night to forget for the Paolites.

Old Firm Derby Ends All Square

Elsewhere, Floriana and Sliema Wanderers played out an entertaining 2–2 draw in the Old Firm derby. Jake Grech put Floriana ahead early on, but Sulahmana Bah levelled before half-time.

The Greens regained their lead through Federico Varela on 71 minutes, only for Miguel Baggio to equalise eight minutes later as both sides shared the points.

The result leaves Floriana just one point clear at the top, with Ħamrun closing in following their win over Birkirkara.
