New Zealand Overcome Harry Brook Century to Beat England in First ODI

Mount Maunganui (Oct. 26) – Harry Brook’s scintillating career-best 135 could not prevent England from falling to a four-wicket defeat against New Zealand in the first one-day international at Bay Oval.

Brook struck 11 sixes in a valiant effort to lift England to 223, but a lethal opening spell from New Zealand seamer Zakary Foulkes (4-41) reduced the hosts to 56-6, leaving the chase well within reach.

Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten on 78, guiding the Black Caps to 224-6 with more than 13 overs to spare and giving New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

“They were outstanding. We knew we had to keep taking wickets,” said New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, praising Foulkes’ swing.

Only Jamie Overton (46) supported Brook in England’s innings, while Brydon Carse removed top-order New Zealand batsmen early, including Kane Williamson’s first golden duck in 166 ODIs.

The series continues in Hamilton on Wednesday and Wellington on Saturday.
