João Fonseca Reaches Swiss Indoors Final, Making History for Brazil

Brazilian teenager João Fonseca advanced to his first ATP 500 final on Saturday, defeating Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6(4), 7-5 at the Swiss Indoors Championships in Basel. The 19-year-old will now face eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Sunday’s title clash.

Competing in his second tour-level semifinal of the year, Fonseca delivered a commanding performance, firing eight aces and 39 winners to overcome the experienced Spaniard.

“I knew it was going to be a tough match—Jaume plays really well on this surface,” said world No. 46 Fonseca. “He puts a lot of pressure, and you have to defend a lot. I don’t like playing against those guys because I prefer to be aggressive and go for my shots. I’m happy with how I stayed mentally strong after getting broken early in the second set. I’m very happy—let’s stay hyped for the final.”

The opening set was evenly contested before Fonseca edged ahead in the tiebreak, clinching it 7-4. Munar started the second set strongly, racing to a 4-2 lead, but the Brazilian fought back to level at 4-4 and closed out the match by winning three of the final four games.

Chasing his second tour-level title after winning his maiden trophy in Buenos Aires earlier this year, Fonseca could break into the Top 30 of the ATP Rankings with a win in Basel.

“It’s been an amazing year,” he said. “I started around No. 130, now I’m in the 40s and into my first ATP 500 final. We skipped the Asia swing because I wasn’t feeling well, but I kept working on my mentality. Now I’m getting these opportunities, and I’m just very happy to be here.”

In the day’s other semifinal, Spain’s Davidovich Fokina advanced to his fourth final of the season after France’s Ugo Humbert retired while trailing 7-6(4), 3-1.
