Sunderland Extend Impressive Home Run, Leaving Wolves at Premier League’s Foot

Known for slow starts this season, having scored just once before halftime in the Premier League, Sunderland put those struggles firmly behind them, quickly finding their rhythm against a struggling Wolves side.
Wilson Isidor fired a powerful near-post effort in the opening stages, only for it to be ruled out, but Sunderland’s bright start soon paid off. In the 16th minute, full-backs Nordi Mukiele and Trai Hume combined brilliantly, exchanging a slick one-two before Mukiele slotted home his first goal for the club.
The Black Cats maintained control and could have doubled their lead before the half-hour mark. A long throw from Mukiele was flicked on by Dan Ballard, landing at Hume’s feet, but his desperate diving header narrowly missed the target.
Wolves struggled to establish any foothold, repeatedly running into a resolute Sunderland defence that dealt with the few chances they created.
After the break, Vítor Pereira’s side showed signs of improvement, but the Portuguese manager cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as Wolves squandered the limited opportunities that came their way. Their lack of composure in the final third was telling; late substitute Tolu Arokodare missed a rare chance in the closing stages, symbolizing a second half that offered very little quality in front of either goal.
Sunderland capitalized late when defender Ladislav Krejci’s attempted interception deflected the ball into his own net, sealing a deserved victory.
While not their most complete performance of the season, Régis Le Bris’ side will be buoyed by their home form, having collected 10 points from their first four top-flight home games—a feat they last achieved in 1968/69.
For Wolves, the struggles continue. They remain at the bottom of the Premier League table, still searching for their first win of the campaign.
