Ronaldo’s Double Heroics Undone by Late Hungary Blow to Portugal’s World Cup Hopes

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a dramatic 92nd-minute equaliser to end Portugal’s perfect start to FIFA World Cup qualifying, as Hungary battled to a 2-2 draw that delayed the hosts’ confirmation of a spot at next summer’s finals.
Having won all three of their opening Group F fixtures, Portugal looked on course for a seventh consecutive World Cup appearance. But Roberto Martínez’s men were caught cold early on when Attila Szalai headed home Szoboszlai’s inswinging corner to give Hungary a shock eighth-minute lead.
The Seleção responded with purpose. Cristiano Ronaldo forced Balázs Tóth into a sharp save before converting Nélson Semedo’s precise cross to level the score and claim his 142nd international goal.
Portugal completed the turnaround just before the break, as Nuno Mendes’ delivery was volleyed home from close range by the irrepressible Ronaldo for his second of the night.
The hosts pressed for a third after the restart, with Pedro Neto denied by Tóth and Rúben Dias and Bruno Fernandes both striking the woodwork in quick succession.
Hungary, however, refused to fold. Szalai rattled the crossbar with a header before their persistence was rewarded in stoppage time, when Szoboszlai arrived at the back post to slot in Dániel Lukács’ cross and snatch a deserved point.
The result keeps Hungary above the Republic of Ireland in Group F, while Portugal must wait until November to secure their passage to the 2026 World Cup finals.
