A life dedicated to football has come to an end with the passing of Antonio “Tonio” Briguglio, one of Malta’s most respected and accomplished match officials.

Briguglio’s refereeing career began in 1960, marking the start of decades of service to the game. His excellence earned him a place on the FIFA Panel, where he served for 16 years, representing Malta on the international stage with distinction.

In 1972, he made history by becoming the first Maltese official appointed to a European final, serving as linesman in the UEFA Youth Final between England and West Germany at Barcelona’s Nou Camp. It was a landmark achievement for Maltese football and a testament to his outstanding reputation.

On the domestic scene, Briguglio was entrusted with officiating the FA Trophy Final on nine occasions, including an unprecedented six consecutive finals, reflecting the confidence placed in his ability and integrity.

His lifelong commitment to Maltese sport was recognised in 2022 when he was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika, honouring his exceptional service and dedication.

In 2025, he added another historic milestone to his legacy by becoming the first referee inducted into the Malta FA Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a career that inspired generations of match officials.

Rest in peace, Tonio.
