France international Ibrahima Konaté has agreed a four-year deal with Real Madrid following his departure from Liverpool, according to a source close to the negotiations speaking to AFP on Monday.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, re-elected on Sunday night, had reportedly promised last week that the centre-back would be his first signing, alongside plans to appoint José Mourinho as head coach.

An official announcement confirming Konaté’s arrival on a contract running until 2030 is expected on Tuesday, the source added.

The 27-year-old is set to join a strong French contingent at the Spanish club, including captain Kylian Mbappé, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga, although the latter was not included in the World Cup squad.

Real Madrid will be Konaté’s fourth club, following spells at Sochaux, RB Leipzig and Liverpool, where he arrived five years ago.

During his time at Anfield, Konaté made 183 appearances and won the FA Cup in his debut season under Jürgen Klopp, as well as the League Cup, while also finishing as a Champions League runner-up after losing to Real Madrid in the final.

Following Arne Slot’s arrival as manager in 2024, Liverpool went on to win the Premier League title last season.

However, the current campaign proved more difficult for the Reds, who only secured Champions League qualification on the final day of the league season.

Konaté, who has earned 28 caps for France, has been included in Didier Deschamps’ squad for the World Cup in North America and is competing for a starting role in central defence.

France will conclude their preparations with a final pre-World Cup friendly against Northern Ireland in Lille on Monday evening.
