England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted that Jude Bellingham faces strong competition for a place in his starting lineup at the World Cup, insisting the Real Madrid midfielder is one of several players capable of earning a spot in a highly competitive squad.

The 22-year-old featured in only four of England’s qualifying matches, while Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers appeared in all eight, highlighting the selection decisions Tuchel must make, particularly in the attacking midfield role.

When asked whether Bellingham still had work to do to secure a starting berth, Tuchel made it clear that no position is guaranteed.

“Yes, he does,” Tuchel told reporters. “He knows he is among the players capable of starting, but we have 14 or 15 players who could all be in the team.

Those roles can always change, but right now I believe we have 14 or 15 genuine starters, and Jude is certainly one of them.”

England are continuing their preparations for the World Cup in Florida after beginning their warm-up schedule with a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday, courtesy of a goal from Harry Kane.

Bellingham wore the captain’s armband for the first time during the second half of the match as Tuchel rotated his squad in challenging hot and humid conditions.

Despite the fierce competition for places, the England manager said he has been impressed by the midfielder’s condition and attitude since returning from injury.

He looks very good in training,” Tuchel said. “I think he is in a really good place at the moment because he has had some time to rest and now has the hunger to get back out on the pitch.”

Tuchel has repeatedly highlighted the importance of depth and versatility within his squad, stressing that several players are capable of starting matches while others could play crucial roles coming off the bench.

While the German coach declined to reveal whether Bellingham is part of England’s leadership group, he confirmed on Sunday that midfielder Declan Rice will serve as vice-captain during the World Cup.

England will play Costa Rica in a friendly on Wednesday before opening their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17.
