Argentina have suffered a setback ahead of the World Cup after defender Leonardo Balerdi was ruled out of the tournament with a calf injury.

The 27-year-old sustained a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg and will no longer be available for selection, the Argentine Football Association confirmed on Saturday.

Balerdi had earned a place in Argentina’s 26-man World Cup squad following a strong season with Olympique de Marseille, where he featured in 36 matches across all competitions.

“Defender Leonardo Balerdi suffered a muscle injury to the soleus of his right leg and will not be part of the squad competing at the World Cup,” the national team said in an official statement.

His withdrawal leaves Argentina needing to adjust their defensive plans just days before the start of the tournament.

“Hang in there, stay strong, and get well soon.”

Argentina have yet to confirm a replacement for the 27-year-old centre-back, who has earned 11 international caps. The squad is continuing its preparations and is set to face Honduras in a friendly later on Saturday.

The defending World Cup champions will begin their Group J campaign against Algeria on June 16, before taking on Austria and Jordan in the group stage.
