Lionel Messi cleared for World Cup duty after overcoming ‘hamstring fatigue’

Lionel Messi sparked concern just weeks ahead of the World Cup after Inter Miami CF confirmed on Monday that he is dealing with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.
The MLS side did not provide a specific timeline for the Argentine captain’s recovery following his unexpected substitution during Miami’s thrilling 6-4 win against Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
Messi, now 38, appeared uncomfortable midway through the second half, clutching the back of his left leg before signaling to the bench that he needed to be replaced in the 73rd minute. Despite the concern, he was seen walking normally as he headed down the tunnel.
In an official statement, Inter Miami explained that further examinations revealed “an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” adding that his return will depend on how he progresses physically in the coming days.
The update leaves uncertainty surrounding the fitness of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as Argentina national football team prepares to defend its World Cup title at the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which begins on June 11.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano later reported that Messi is still expected to be fit and available for the World Cup.
Argentina national football team will open their World Cup campaign five days later with a clash against Algeria national football team in Kansas City.
Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023, Lionel Messi has carefully managed his playing schedule, with the club often resting him during busy stretches of fixtures to protect his fitness.
Major League Soccer has now paused its season ahead of the World Cup, giving players additional time to prepare for the tournament.
Although Messi has yet to officially announce whether he will feature at the finals, he is widely expected to return for what would be a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance.
Argentina are expected to unveil their squad next week before travelling to the United States for warm-up matches against Honduras national football team on June 6 and Iceland national football team on June 9.
