Ħamrun Spartans F.C. secured third place in the YoHealth Malta Premier League and booked their place in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers after a commanding 2-0 victory over Valletta F.C..

Goals from Joseph Mbong and Damir Ceter inside the opening eight minutes proved decisive as the Spartans quickly took control and never looked back.

Following the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Finalissima, Ħamrun responded strongly in the play-off for third place, producing an assured display to at least salvage European qualification from what has otherwise been a frustrating domestic campaign.

Valletta’s season, however, is still alive, with the Citizens retaining another opportunity to qualify for European football if they defeat Gżira United F.C. in the FA Trophy final on May 23.

Ħamrun coach Giacomo Modica was forced into a change in goal, with Brazilian goalkeeper Francisco Celio replacing the injured Henry Bonello. Valletta coach Thane Micallef also reshuffled his side, handing Julani Archibald a starting role in goal in place of the injured Adilson Maringa, while Ahmed Adebayo was preferred to Shaft Brewer.

The Spartans could hardly have asked for a better start, taking the lead within the opening minute. Matthew Guillaumier lofted the ball into the path of Joseph Mbong, who guided a header beyond Archibald and into the net.

Valletta struggled to recover from the early setback and Ħamrun doubled their advantage seven minutes later. Mbong delivered an inviting cross to Kleri Serber, who nodded the ball across goal for the unmarked Damir Ceter to head home from close range.

Valletta gradually settled and created their first notable opportunity on 17 minutes when Diogo Tavares forced Celio into a strong save with a powerful angled strike. The Spartans remained dangerous, though, with Mbong and Guillaumier both going close before the interval.

Ħamrun suffered a setback before half-time when Ryan Compri was forced off injured and replaced by Ivan Inzouine. Despite that blow, the Spartans maintained control and limited Valletta’s attacking opportunities.

At the start of the second half, Valletta introduced Mattias Ellul and Andrea Zammit in an attempt to inject more energy into their play. Yuri Messias tested Celio from a free-kick shortly after the restart, but the Spartans goalkeeper remained alert.

Ħamrun continued to threaten on the counterattack and should arguably have added to their lead, with Eder, Garcia and Ceter all going close as Valletta goalkeeper Julani Archibald produced a series of important saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

In the end, the Spartans comfortably saw out the match to secure a crucial victory and confirm their return to European competition next season.
