Busuttil reclaims Premier Snooker crown with dominant second-day display

Aaron Busuttil has solidified his status at the pinnacle of local cue sports, securing his third consecutive local Premier Snooker Championship title. In a thrilling two-day finale organized by the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association (MBSA), Busuttil avenged last year’s defeat by overcoming his perennial rival and defending champion, Brian Cini, with a 10-6 victory.
The triumph marks the third time Busuttil has hoisted the prestigious trophy, having previously dominated the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. The encounter marked the sixth championship final between Busuttil and Cini, cementing their reputation as the undisputed titans of modern Maltese snooker.
A Gruelling New Format
This year’s tournament raised the stakes by introducing a demanding best-of-19 frames format split across two intense days of play. The regulations mandated a strict split: a grueling opening session of nine frames on Wednesday evening, followed by the remaining ten frames on Thursday to determine the champion.
Day One: Cini Edges Ahead
The opening session on Wednesday night proved to be a highly tactical, see-saw affair. Busuttil laid down an early marker, executing sharp safety play and clinical potting to race into an immediate 2-0 lead (80-36, 81-0).
However, the defending champion responded with trademark resilience. Cini mounted a fierce counter-attack, capitalizing on minor safety errors from Busuttil to string together four consecutive frames (45-72, 53-83, 1-66, 16-71) to surge ahead 4-2.
Refusing to let the session slip away, Busuttil rallied to take the next two frames (81-36, 71-59), leveling the match at 4-4. The final frame of the evening proved crucial; Cini dug deep to claim a tense 52-73 victory, capitalising on a final-session error to head into the overnight intermission with a slender 5-4 advantage.
Day Two: Busuttil’s Formidable Masterclass
If the first day belonged to tactical parity, Thursday’s second session was a showcase of pure offensive dominance by Busuttil. Returning to the table in formidable form, he completely suffocated Cini’s operational space, denying the defending champion any rhythm or clear opportunities.
Busuttil executed a flawless five-frame blitz to open the session, turning his 4-5 deficit into a commanding 9-5 provisional lead. His break-building during this stretch was nothing short of elite, treating spectators to a masterclass in heavy scoring:
- Frame 11: A blistering 76-point break (76-1)
- Frame 12: A second consecutive 76-point break (82-38)
- Frame 13: A ruthless 87-point clearance (87-19)
- Frame 14: A magnificent, tournament-best 129-point century break (130-7), mathematically securing the highest break of the entire championship season.
The Closing Frames
Facing a mountain to climb at 9-5, Cini showed glimpses of his championship pedigree in the 15th frame, halting Busuttil’s momentum with a resilient 15-70 pull-back to bring the score to 9-6.
The resurgence was short-lived. In the 16th frame, Busuttil reasserted his dominance, controlling the table from the opening reds. He sealed the frame 66-5, bringing an end to the contest with a definitive 10-6 scoreline.
Final Frame Scores:
- Day 1: 80-36, 81-0, 45-72, 53-83, 1-66, 16-71, 81-36, 71-59, 52-73 (Cini led 5-4)
- Day 2: 82-38, 76-1, 87-19, 75-42, 130-7, 15-70, 66-5 (Busuttil won session 6-1)
Coronation of the Champion
Following the conclusion of the high-octane final, the official presentation ceremony took place at the venue. Mr. Marlon Brincat, Managing Director of tournament main sponsors CE Installations Limited, was on hand alongside MBSA President Ivan Brincat to present the silverware.
To a roaring ovation from the local snooker community, Aaron Busuttil officially etched his name onto the historic trophy for the third time, re-establishing his reign over the island’s premier cue sport division.
