Villa rout Nottingham Forest with four-goal masterclass in Europe

Aston Villa produced a sensational comeback to defeat Nottingham Forest 4-0 on the night and overturn their 1-0 first-leg deficit, securing a place in the UEFA Europa League final. The victory also preserved Villa’s flawless home record in European competition this season.
An electric atmosphere surrounded Villa Park before kick-off, with supporters from both sides dreaming of a historic European night. That intensity carried straight onto the pitch, as the match began at a relentless pace.
Despite the frantic opening, there were moments of real quality. Omari Hutchinson cut inside Lucas Digne and curled a strike narrowly wide, while Stefan Ortega reacted sharply to push Pau Torres’ header over the bar.
Emiliano Buendia later earned a free-kick in a dangerous position, but his effort was blocked by the Nottingham Forest wall. From the resulting corner, Youri Tielemans rose highest but directed his header off target.
As Villa gradually gained control of the contest, the commitment of both teams was clear to see when Ollie Watkins and Morato collided in a painful clash of heads during a fiercely contested moment.
Refusing to let up, Watkins gave Villa the lead on the night and restored parity in the tie just five minutes after the restart. Buendía combined neatly with the forward before gliding into space and delivering a precise pass for Watkins, who had drifted into the six-yard box to finish from close range.
Villa’s momentum showed no signs of fading before half-time, with their heavily bandaged striker continuing to cause problems and forcing the goalkeeper into a sharp save with a powerful strike.
Looking to change the flow of the contest, Vitor Pereira introduced captain Ryan Yates at the break, and the midfielder immediately looked to break up Villa’s attacking rhythm.
Nevertheless, Unai Emery’s men were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute after Nikola Milenkovic was penalised for tugging at Torres’ shirt. Buendía then coolly converted from the spot, sending Ortega the wrong way to give Villa the aggregate lead for the first time in the tie.
Watkins thought he had added another soon after, only for the offside flag to cut celebrations short. Villa continued to dominate proceedings, with John McGinn later testing Ortega with a driven effort straight at the goalkeeper.
The Villa skipper proved far more clinical moments later when Watkins teed him up on the edge of the area. McGinn took full advantage, curling a superb finish into the far corner to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Remarkably, McGinn was picked out again shortly after by Rogers and attempted the opposite corner, but delivered with the same precision to round off a superb night for Villa. The result saw Aston Villa end their three-match losing streak in style and book their place in only their second European final, where they will face Freiburg, 44 years on from their first appearance at that stage.
In the process, Villa also brought Nottingham Forest’s 10-game unbeaten run to a halt, eliminating them from the UEFA Europa League.
