Andreeva Holds Off Baptiste to Reach Maiden Madrid Open Final

A composed Mirra Andreeva held off a spirited late fightback from Hailey Baptiste to secure a 6-4, 7-6(8) victory in a tense encounter on Thursday, booking her place in the Madrid Open final for the first time.
Fresh from turning 19 on Wednesday, Andreeva will now face either Marta Kostyuk or Anastasia Potapova in the final, with the pair set to meet later in the day.
“I feel so much adrenaline inside, I still feel nervous,” Andreeva said after the match. “Honestly, I’m just so happy that I won… I’m very happy with how I served today.”
Baptiste had produced a major upset in the quarter-finals by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka, but she was unable to maintain that level against the ninth seed. Andreeva was particularly dominant on serve in the opening set, dropping just two points as she set the tone early.
The American held her ground until the seventh game, when a wayward forehand from Baptiste drifted wide to hand Andreeva a break point. The teenager then produced a superb backhand down the line to secure the crucial break and take the opening set.
Baptiste, who finished the first set with 16 unforced errors, continued to struggle in the second, allowing Andreeva to break again for a 3-2 advantage.
However, the American refused to go away. She saved a match point in the ninth game, and when Andreeva served for the match, momentum shifted again. The Russian double-faulted and misjudged a smash, before Baptiste struck back with two clean winners to earn her first break of the match and level at 5-5.
