Women’s Knockout Semi-Finals Take Centre Stage After International Break

Domestic football returns this weekend with the semi-finals of the Assikura Women’s Knockout, following the recent international window in which Malta competed in the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Both last-four ties are scheduled for Sunday, with Valletta taking on Birkirkara before Hibernians face champions Mġarr United in what is expected to be the standout clash of the day.
The two winners will advance to the final, set to be played on Friday, May 1, at the Centenary Stadium.
Mġarr Chasing Historic Treble
Mġarr United head into the semi-finals as favourites as they continue their pursuit of a historic treble.
The Greens have already lifted the Jubilee Cup after defeating Hibernians at the National Stadium and recently secured their first-ever league title in emphatic fashion, completing the campaign unbeaten.
Their only defeat of the season came in September, when they lost the Super Cup final to Swieqi United.
Built on a strong defensive structure and potent attacking threat, Mġarr have been the standout side in women’s football this season and will be determined to complete a memorable clean sweep of honours.
Hibernians Seeking End to Final Frustration
Standing in their way are Hibernians, who are desperate to bring an end to a frustrating run in major finals.
The Paolites have lost four finals over the past four seasons — three in this competition, including last season’s defeat to Mġarr, as well as the recent Jubilee Cup final.
They now have another opportunity to challenge for silverware and will be eager to reverse that trend by upsetting the reigning champions.
Birkirkara Eye Momentum, Valletta Hope for Surprise
In the other semi-final, Birkirkara come into the tie in strong form after an impressive second half of the campaign.
The Stripes will hope to carry that momentum into the knockout stage as they target a place in the final and the chance to compete for silverware.
Their opponents Valletta endured a difficult league season and finished bottom of the standings, but cup football offers a fresh opportunity and the Citizens will be hoping to spring a surprise.
