Bayer Leverkusen’s UCL Push Hit by Late Defeat to Augsburg

Bayer Leverkusen missed the opportunity to secure a third consecutive Bundesliga win after Augsburg struck a late penalty to claim a 2-1 victory at the BayArena, a result that drops Die Werkself to sixth in the table.
The visitors made a nervy start, almost gifting Leverkusen an early chance when a poor clearance fell to Ibrahim Maza, but Finn Dahmen reacted well to tip his effort over the bar.
Leverkusen eventually took control and broke the deadlock through Patrik Schick, who scored his 75th goal for the club with a powerful header from Edmond Tapsoba’s cross. The striker continued his fine league form, netting in four consecutive Bundesliga matches.
However, Augsburg responded quickly. Fabian Rieder levelled the score almost immediately, meeting Dimitris Giannoulis’ lay-off with a strike that appeared to deceive goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
Before the break, Leverkusen had multiple chances to regain the lead. Nathan Tella headed over from close range and later dragged another effort wide, while Dahmen denied Edmond Tapsoba, and both Schick and Alejandro Grimaldo missed the target. At the other end, Rodrigo Ribeiro also went close for Augsburg, but Dahmen’s double save from Tella and Schick kept the score level.
The second half began with Augsburg on the front foot, as Flekken was forced into action to deny Giannoulis from a tight angle before pushing away another effort from Ribeiro moments later.
Despite continued pressure, Leverkusen remained wasteful in front of goal, with Nathan Tella left frustrated once again. The forward dribbled past several defenders but could only fire straight at Finn Dahmen with the goal seemingly at his mercy. Alejandro Grimaldo, fresh from a brace in their previous home match, also tried his luck but sent his effort narrowly wide.
The hosts kept probing but lacked a clinical edge, as Ibrahim Maza curled an attempt off target before Tella squandered another gilt-edged opportunity, somehow failing to make contact from just yards out.
Leverkusen’s frustrations deepened when they were denied a penalty after a VAR review, despite appeals for a Jeffrey Gouweleeuw handball inside the box.
Then, in a dramatic late twist, Augsburg were awarded a stoppage-time penalty after Montrell Culbreath brought down Uchenna Ogundu in the area. Fabian Rieder stepped up and kept his composure, converting the spot-kick to complete his brace and secure a first win in six Bundesliga matches for the visitors.
The result ends Leverkusen’s seven-game unbeaten league run and shifts their focus to a DFB-Pokal semi-final against Bayern Munich in midweek. Augsburg, meanwhile, complete a shock league double over their opponents, a result that lifts them away from danger and provides a memorable moment for their travelling supporters.
