Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli is expected to avoid further FA punishment after pushing referee Sam Barrott during Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final loss to Southampton.

The incident occurred as Barrott attempted to manage a quick free-kick, with Martinelli receiving a yellow card for his actions at the time.

No additional disciplinary action will be taken beyond that booking.

According to reports, because the referee dealt with the situation during the match, the FA will not pursue any further investigation or impose a heavier sanction.

Former referee Mark Halsey strongly criticised the incident, saying: “I’m sorry, but Gabriel Martinelli showed complete disrespect towards match official Sam Barrott in that moment.

“Although a yellow card was given, I believe it should have been a red. Players simply cannot make contact with a referee, especially pushing them aside.

“You also have to think about referees across the country, from grassroots to amateur levels, who officiate matches every weekend. What kind of example does that set for them?”
