Malta’s hopes of progression were emphatically ended after a 3-0 defeat to Luxembourg, sealing a heavy 5-0 aggregate loss over two legs. Despite an encouraging start, the visitors were ultimately undone by clinical finishing, defensive lapses, and a costly red card on a disappointing night.

Head coach Emilio De Leo, taking charge of his 12th match, introduced two changes to the side. Joseph Mbong returned from suspension, while Gabriel Mentz was preferred in central defence. Meanwhile, Zach Muscat marked a personal milestone, earning his 80th international cap.
Malta began brightly, creating early chances through Ilyas Chouaref and Mbong, both of whom tested goalkeeper Anthony Moris. However, against the run of play, Luxembourg struck first in the 20th minute. Danel Sinani delivered a precise cross to Vincent Thill, who finished confidently past Henry Bonello.
Malta had a chance to stay in contention before halftime when Sinani stepped up from the penalty spot after a foul on Leandro Barreiro, but Bonello produced an excellent save to keep the deficit at one.
Any hopes of a comeback faded shortly after the restart. Christopher Martins capitalised on a defensive error and set up Sinani, who made no mistake in doubling the lead. Malta’s task became even more difficult when Mbong was sent off midway through the second half following a foul on Sebastien Thill.

With a numerical advantage, Luxembourg remained firmly in control and added a third goal in the 70th minute. Substitute Tomas Moreira timed his run perfectly to meet a through ball from Seid Korac before finishing calmly.
Malta showed brief signs of resistance late on, with Adam Magri Overend forcing a save from Moris after good work by Anthon Ewurum, but the outcome was long decided.
Attention now shifts to the upcoming UEFA Nations League 2026–27, where Malta will face Andorra and Gibraltar in Group D1 between September and November, offering a fresh opportunity to regroup and respond.
