Arsenal F.C. manager Mikel Arteta addressed the media ahead of his side’s upcoming Premier League clash with Everton F.C. at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Gunners head into the fixture following a disappointing 1–1 draw against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in European competition. Despite that result, Arsenal remain in a strong position domestically, holding a seven-point lead over second-placed Manchester City F.C. as they continue their push for a first league title in 23 years.

Arteta reflects on Moyes and European results

Arteta also spoke about facing Everton manager David Moyes, a former mentor during his playing days on Merseyside. The Arsenal boss credited Moyes for the role he played in shaping his career.

“A big part of his staff have huge memories for me,” Arteta said. “He changed my career after my decision to go back to Spain. He brought me to Everton and we shared a lot of incredible moments together.”

The Spaniard also commented on recent European matches involving English clubs, highlighting the intensity shown by Newcastle United F.C. in their encounter with FC Barcelona.

“I realise what is happening in the Premier League and what we saw the other day,” he added. “Barcelona are one of the most exciting teams to watch, but when they faced Newcastle it was intense and very strong in transition. We saw a type of game Barcelona don’t normally play, so huge credit to Newcastle.”

“Rules are rules”

In recent weeks, Arsenal’s set-piece routines—particularly their corner strategies—have drawn criticism from rival managers and sections of supporters who believe the tactics push the limits of the game’s spirit.

Arteta, however, dismissed those concerns and insisted his team is simply operating within the laws of the game.

“That’s why there are rules,” he said. “If you don’t want to see long throws, then change the rules so they cannot take longer.

“The biggest issue people talk about is man-to-man marking. If you say you cannot defend man-to-man, then you will have a completely different league.”

With the title race heating up, Arsenal will be focused on maintaining their advantage at the top of the table when they welcome Everton to the Emirates Stadium this weekend.
