Jack Draper stuns Novak Djokovic in thrilling victory to reach Indian Wells Quarter-Finals

Jack Draper pulled off a remarkable upset on Wednesday, defeating defending champion Novak Djokovic 4–6, 6–4, 7–6 (7/5) to reach the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells Masters.
While world number one Carlos Alcaraz advanced comfortably to the last eight for the fifth consecutive year, and Daniil Medvedev and Cameron Norrie recorded straight-sets wins, Draper’s victory required a punishing battle over three sets. The Briton wore down the 38-year-old Djokovic in a thrilling final set, denying the Serb a return to the quarter-finals for the first time since his fifth Indian Wells title in 2016.
“I came out here tonight and I won that match through determination and trying to problem-solve and do my best and have a great attitude,” Draper said. “I kept Novak on the move with multiple drop shots, and it paid off.”
The match was finely balanced through the first two sets, with momentum shifting in the opening game of the third. Both players chased down drop shots and scrambled for lobs in an epic rally, which Djokovic eventually won with an overhead to take a 40-30 lead. Exhausted, he collapsed to the court, only to see Draper win the next point. Djokovic later admitted that point marked the turning moment.
“One point. It was great winning that point in that game, but I just ran completely out of gas,” Djokovic said.
Draper broke Djokovic in his next service game but missed the chance to close the match when serving at 5–4. Djokovic couldn’t capitalize fully in the tiebreaker, leading 4–3 but ultimately unable to hang on.
“He played a sloppy game to close it out 5–4, and I got the crowd backing me. I felt the energy. It was so close,” Djokovic said.
Playing just his second tournament since a six-month layoff due to an arm injury, Draper celebrated a career-defining win.
“To come out here against Novak, for me the greatest tennis player there is, I’m just incredibly proud of myself,” Draper said.
Draper’s reward is a quarter-final clash against two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev on Thursday. Medvedev advanced with a 6–2, 6–4 win over American Alex Michelsen.
