João Pedro scored his first Premier League hat-trick to inspire Chelsea F.C. to an emphatic 4–1 victory over fellow UEFA Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park.

The two sides began the night separated by six points in the race for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, with Villa holding the stronger position in the standings. The hosts made the perfect start, breaking the deadlock just three minutes in when Douglas Luiz cleverly backheeled a cross from Leon Bailey into the net.

Chelsea responded positively as they looked to recover from their Matchday 28 defeat to Arsenal F.C.. Pedro soon tested Emiliano Martínez with a firm header that required a strong save, before Cole Palmer tried his luck with a more routine effort for the Argentine goalkeeper.

The visitors eventually found their equaliser when Pedro slid in to convert Malo Gusto’s precise low cross into an empty net, bringing the game back onto level terms.

Villa grew in confidence midway through the half and began creating chances of their own. Ollie Watkins proved the main threat and twice forced saves from Chelsea’s incoming goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen. The England striker even thought he had restored the hosts’ lead after capitalising on a loose pass from Reece James, only for the goal to be ruled out for a very tight offside.

Chelsea made the most of that reprieve in the seventh minute of eight added on before half-time. Pedro — arguably the Blues’ most decisive performer since the arrival of head coach Liam Rosenior — produced a delicate chip over Martínez to score his 13th league goal of the season and give the visitors a 2–1 lead at the break.

Both sides pushed forward in the second half, but it was Chelsea who struck next. Palmer, who had struggled to influence the first period, reacted quickest after Martínez pushed James’ cross into a dangerous area, firing home to extend the London side’s advantage.

By that stage, Chelsea were in full flow. A flowing team move produced their fourth goal when Palmer threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the run of Alejandro Garnacho, who squared the ball across the box for Pedro to complete his hat-trick.

Garnacho nearly added further gloss to the scoreline late on, but Martínez denied him from close range. Nevertheless, it was an outstanding evening for Rosenior’s side as Chelsea closed the gap to the top four.

For Villa, the defeat continues a worrying trend at home. They have now managed just one win in their last six matches at Villa Park — form that could prove costly in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
