Diego Simeone cautious of struggling Barcelona despite Atletico’s strong Copa del Rey advantage

A 4-0 advantage ahead of Tuesday’s second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at FC Barcelona offers little reassurance to Diego Simeone, who has urged Atletico Madrid to maintain discipline against the LaLiga leaders.
Atletico stunned Barcelona with a first-half blitz last month, keeping the Catalans scoreless in a domestic match for the first time this season and putting themselves on the brink of their first Copa del Rey final since 2012/13.
“We’re thinking about the match ahead of us, against a very good opponent, who are attacking, open, and play as a team, making them one of the most competitive sides in LaLiga and in Europe,” Simeone told reporters on Monday.
Barcelona, who defeated Atletico 3-1 in the league in December, have been in red-hot form recently, scoring seven goals across their last two matches, including a hat-trick by Lamine Yamal against Villarreal CF on Saturday.
“Yamal is a very good individual player, particularly dangerous in the final stages of the game… we have to put him where he feels most uncomfortable, which is defending,” Simeone said.
Atletico sit third in LaLiga, 13 points behind Barcelona, with 12 games remaining. They have also reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16, where they will face Tottenham Hotspur.
Simeone expressed satisfaction at competing on multiple fronts with three months left in the season.
“In summer, you always think, I wish we could compete for everything. Now we’re in a fantastic position, fighting for what we want,” he said.
