Kylian Mbappé will miss Real Madrid CF’s Champions League play-off second leg against SL Benfica on Wednesday due to a left knee injury, according to sources close to the dressing room consulted by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The French forward has been struggling for several weeks with an issue in the lateral ligament of his left knee. Despite continuing to feature through the discomfort, the problem has now forced him to withdraw from the decisive return leg.
Mbappé, who is currently the top scorer in both LaLiga and the Champions League this season, had been managing the injury while remaining a key figure in Madrid’s attack. However, medical staff have opted against risking further damage, ruling him out of the clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Real Madrid head into the second leg with a narrow advantage after securing a 1-0 victory in the first meeting. Mbappé’s absence represents a significant blow for the Spanish giants as they look to finish the job and secure their place in the next round.
