Schick fires Bayer Leverkusen to first-leg win over Olympiakos

Bayer Leverkusen secured their first-ever away knockout victory in the UEFA Champions League, with Patrik Schick’s brace propelling the German side to a 2-0 triumph at Olympiacos.
The Greek hosts, having already lost 2-0 to Leverkusen earlier in the group stage, started aggressively. Mehdi Taremi squandered an early chance, slamming a long-ball opportunity wide. Meanwhile, Schick was denied at close range, and Ernest Poku fired just past the far post. Olympiacos responded with Gelson Martins’ fizzing effort, expertly tipped around the post by the visitors’ goalkeeper.
Konstantinos Tzolakis produced an even more spectacular save to keep Olympiacos in the contest, diverting Ibrahim Maza’s point-blank volley onto the bar. Poku then misfired one-on-one before the hosts were denied again at the stroke of half-time, as Ayoub El Kaabi’s neat finish was ruled offside following a VAR review.
After the break, Olympiacos pressed immediately. Martins shot narrowly over from 25 yards, and Giulian Biancone’s header sailed off target. Alejandro Grimaldo also wasted a chance for Leverkusen with a tame effort straight at Tzolakis.
Leverkusen eventually broke the deadlock when Schick ran onto a perfectly timed pass from Poku and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Schick doubled his tally, rising unmarked from a corner to head home his fourth goal in as many matches. Despite Tzolakis’ best efforts, the strike was unstoppable.
The match was effectively sealed when substitute Lorenzo Scipioni curled over, leaving Olympiacos’ attack toothless. The Greek side extended their poor run of form to just one win in five games, while Leverkusen celebrated their sixth win in seven outings since a January defeat to the same opponents, finally ending a four-game winless streak in Greece.
