Michael Keown emerged victorious in the prestigious Handicap Challenge Cup organized by the Royal Malta Golf Club, finishing three under par over two rounds to secure the title after two days of competitive golf. Keown’s consistent performance across both medal rounds proved decisive in a tournament that once again attracted a strong field.

Pavel Lunev finished as runner-up, while Panos Baltzis completed the podium in third place, rounding off a tightly contested edition of one of the club’s historic trophies.

First played in 1891, the Handicap Challenge Cup is steeped in tradition. Originally staged alongside the Scratch Challenge as a fallback competition, it has since evolved into the club’s third major trophy and remains one of the most keenly contested honours on the calendar.

The competition is decided by an individual 36-hole aggregate medal format, played over two consecutive days, Saturday and Sunday. A maximum full handicap allowance of 21 applies, with each player’s handicap from Day 1 retained for the second round.

In the event of a tie, the winner is determined by the better score in the second day’s medal round. Should that still not separate the players, the countback system, best back nine and subsequent comparisons as outlined in the Open Competitions Rules, is applied to the second round scores.

This year’s edition attracted 90 entrants overall, with 66 players making the cut to compete on the second day, underlining both the popularity and competitive standard of the tournament.

Prizes were awarded to the winner, runner-up and third place, with Keown’s composed and disciplined display earning him a well-deserved place in the competition’s long and distinguished history.
