Everton manager David Moyes has criticised what he called “killjoy rules” after being shown a yellow card for rushing onto the pitch to celebrate Beto’s dramatic late equaliser in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Moyes couldn’t contain his emotions at the Amex Stadium when Beto struck in the seventh minute of stoppage time, cancelling out Pascal Gross’ 73rd-minute opener. His ecstatic dash forced referee Chris Kavanagh to brandish a yellow card for leaving the technical area.

The scene drew comparisons to David Pleat’s famous pitch invasion at Maine Road in 1983, when his Luton side secured top-flight survival with a win over Manchester City. Moyes even admitted he briefly considered capping his celebration with a knee slide.

Although he ultimately thought better of it, the 62-year-old insisted the booking wouldn’t stop him from celebrating in future.

“I hope you’re not going to call me ‘Pleaty’ going forward,” Moyes joked. “The difference is David Pleat doesn’t get booked for it—people enjoy seeing those celebrations. We’re killing it when managers can’t come out of their technical area to celebrate, knee slide, do things that give everyone a bit to talk about.”

Asked if he’d repeat the move, Moyes replied with a grin: “I bloody will do it again! Actually, if I’d been a bit more mobile, I might have done a knee slide. That would only have got me a yellow too, so I might as well have gone the whole hog.”
