Everton winger Jack Grealish is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a fractured foot, casting serious doubt over his chances of making England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The 30-year-old, who is on loan from Manchester City, is likely to undergo surgery after sustaining a stress fracture during Everton’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on January 18.

Everton manager David Moyes confirmed on Friday that the injury could rule Grealish out for the remainder of the campaign.

“We believe he’s probably going to need surgery,” Moyes told reporters. “That’s not absolutely confirmed yet, but it likely rules him out for the rest of the season.

“It’s really disappointing for the player and for the club. He’s such an important figure for us—his character and experience have been invaluable. We’ll miss him. He’s done a lot of really good things here.”

Grealish’s last appearance for England came against Finland in October 2024, but his strong form at Everton had revived his World Cup prospects. England head coach Thomas Tuchel had even spoken with the winger following Everton’s win at Manchester United in November, underlining his renewed status in the national setup.

However, the injury now makes it unlikely that Grealish will be fit in time for the tournament, which takes place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11.

Before the setback, Grealish had been enjoying an impressive spell on Merseyside, registering two goals and six assists in 20 Premier League appearances. He had rediscovered his best form after a difficult period at Manchester City, where he struggled for regular playing time under Pep Guardiola.

When asked whether the injury could affect Everton’s plans to sign Grealish permanently, Moyes said it was “far too early” to discuss any long-term arrangements involving the former Aston Villa star.
