Grimaldo and Tillman strike as Leverkusen seal top-24 spot with victory over Villarreal

Bayer Leverkusen booked their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout round play-offs with a commanding 3-0 victory over Villarreal at the BayArena, extending the Spanish side’s losing streak to four matches in all competitions.
After a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Olympiacos in their previous European outing, Leverkusen knew only a win would guarantee their progression, and they set the tone early with a confident and energetic start.
Their breakthrough came after just 13 minutes in unusual fashion. Malik Tillman pressed Villarreal goalkeeper Arnau Tenas, whose attempted clearance rebounded off the American midfielder and rolled into the net to give Die Werkself a fortunate but deserved lead.
Xabi Alonso’s side continued to dominate possession and territory, repeatedly stretching the visitors’ defence. They went close to doubling their advantage midway through the half when Ibrahim Maza’s long-range effort crashed against the right post.
Leverkusen’s pressure eventually told again 10 minutes before the interval. Tillman struck for a second time, firing a first-time shot from the edge of the area into the bottom-right corner to give the hosts a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.
The second half began quietly, with few chances at either end, but the hosts soon reasserted their control. Just before the hour mark, Alejandro Grimaldo put the result beyond doubt after combining neatly with Lucas Vázquez, before drilling a low finish into the near bottom-left corner.
That third goal effectively ended the contest. Leverkusen managed the remainder of the match with confidence, content to preserve their advantage and secure their place in the play-off stage.
For Villarreal, it was a bitter end to a disappointing European campaign. The Yellow Submarine finished joint-bottom of the league phase, only avoiding last place on goal difference ahead of Kairat Almaty, as their Champions League hopes came to a premature and frustrating close.
