Bodø/Glimt produced a remarkable comeback to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages on their main draw debut, defeating Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano and denying the hosts automatic qualification for the last 16.

Atlético had kept clean sheets in their previous two home matches, but they were almost breached twice inside the opening five minutes. José María Giménez was forced to clear off the line after Sondre Brunstad Fet chipped Jan Oblak, before Kasper Høgh capitalised on a loose Koke pass but blazed over.

The hosts soon responded, with Alexander Sørloth testing Nikita Haikin from close range and Álex Baena briefly celebrating a headed goal that was ruled out for offside.

Atlético’s pressure eventually told after 15 minutes. Sørloth, facing his former club, rose to meet Dávid Hancko’s cross and headed home, opening the scoring for the fourth time in Atleti’s last seven matches.

Pablo Barrios and Sørloth both went close to extending the lead, but Haikin’s impressive goalkeeping kept Bodø/Glimt in the contest. The visitors took full advantage when they equalised against the run of play. Fredrik André Bjørkan squared for Fredrik Sjøvold, who calmly picked out the bottom corner in a crowded penalty area.

Despite the leveller, Atlético continued to dominate before the break. Haikin denied Nico González with a fine save, Julián Álvarez headed onto the roof of the net, and Barrios rattled the crossbar as the hosts piled on the pressure.

The pattern remained the same after half-time, with Atlético controlling possession but failing to convert their chances. Their wastefulness was punished just before the hour mark in a chaotic scramble inside the box. After Håkon Evjen saw three efforts blocked, Høgh reacted quickest to stab home at the near post and give Bodø/Glimt the lead.

Simeone’s side tried to respond, but their attacking play continued to lack precision. Sørloth and substitute Thiago Almada both missed good opportunities, summing up a frustrating night in front of goal.

As Atlético ran out of ideas, their 13-match home winning streak came to an end, leaving them to settle for a seeded place in the knockout play-offs.

For Bodø/Glimt, the victory marked one of the greatest nights in their history. A second stunning win in the space of a week secured their place in the knockout stage and capped a memorable debut campaign on Europe’s biggest stage.
