Manchester City snapped a four-game Premier League winless streak (D3, L1) with a 2-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers, temporarily cutting the gap to league leaders Arsenal to four points.

Following a disappointing Manchester Derby defeat and a Champions League setback against Bodø/Glimt, Pep Guardiola needed a response against rock-bottom Wolves.

Rob Edwards’ side had conceded just twice in their previous four league games, but their resistance was broken early. Former Wolves man Matheus Nunes delivered a pinpoint ball for Omar Marmoush, who prodded home inside six minutes.

Marmoush, chosen ahead of PL top scorer Erling Haaland—who had now gone eight competitive games without an open-play goal—came close to doubling City’s advantage in the 35th minute, striking the post. VAR later cleared a potential penalty for a Yerson Mosquera handball in the build-up, keeping Wolves in contention.

As the first half neared its close, City’s lead was further extended. Antoine Semenyo, continuing a purple patch since joining the club, fired a low strike past José Sá to make it 2-0, his third goal in four appearances.

Wolves tried to mount a response after the break. André nearly halved the deficit with a curling free-kick over the bar, and Mosquera’s header from a Mateus Mané set-piece was tipped away by Gianluigi Donnarumma’s trailing hand. A late Semenyo effort cannoned off the crossbar, while Mosquera’s 86th-minute header also struck the woodwork, ending any hope of a comeback.

The victory keeps City undefeated in 31 Premier League matches against teams starting the day at the bottom of the table (W25, D6), including 10 consecutive home wins by a combined 38-0 scoreline. Most importantly, the three points maintain pressure on Arsenal, who can restore a seven-point cushion when they face Manchester United on Sunday.

For Wolves, their five-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W2, D3) comes to an end, and survival in the Premier League remains a distant prospect despite recent improvement.
