Union Berlin strike in stoppage time to shatter Augsburg’s hopes

Union Berlin extended their unbeaten Bundesliga run to four games despite being reduced to 10 men, salvaging a dramatic 1-1 draw away at Augsburg in stoppage time.
Augsburg, just two points above the relegation zone going into the match, looked nervous in possession throughout the first half and struggled to create meaningful chances in the final third. Union Berlin aimed to exploit that, with Oliver Burke particularly dangerous on the break.
Burke teed up the first big opportunity as his cross found the late run of Andras Schafer, but the midfielder’s header looped harmlessly over Finn Dahmen’s bar. Moments later, Jeong Woo-Yeong tested Dahmen from distance, but the shot was easily saved. Burke then went close again in the 28th minute, racing through on goal, only to fire wide of the near post.
Augsburg’s home fans briefly disrupted the flow of the game on the half-hour mark, prompting six minutes of added time—and they were rewarded with a stunning strike. Alexis Claude-Maurice produced a goal-of-the-season contender, curling a dipping effort from 35 yards that kissed the crossbar before settling in the net past Frederik Rønnow.
Claude-Maurice nearly doubled Augsburg’s lead just before the hour with a free-kick that beat Rønnow but rattled the outside of the post. Moments later, a swift counter gave Anton Kade a golden opportunity 10 yards out, only for Rønnow to make a superb low save.
Union Berlin’s hopes suffered a setback when Derrick Kohn was shown a straight red card for a last-ditch challenge that caught Samuel Essende in the face. Yet even with 10 men, the visitors found a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time. Marin Ljubičić was first to react, diverting Andrej Ilić’s shot into the net to snatch a point.
The draw extends Augsburg’s unbeaten home run to four games, but they remain perilously close to the relegation zone, sitting 15th and only three points above the drop. Union Berlin, meanwhile, remain in contention for European football next season, moving within six points of the top six despite having played a game more.
