Sevilla’s miserable run continued as they slipped to a late 1-0 defeat against top-six hopefuls Celta Vigo in LaLiga, extending their scoreless streak in all competitions to four matches.

The early exchanges were defined by defensive discipline rather than attacking quality. Sevilla captain Nemanja Gudelj made a crucial interception to cut out an Iago Aspas through-ball that would have sent Ilaix Moriba clean through on goal. Despite that intervention, it was Celta who recorded the first effort on target, with Bryan Zaragoza forcing Odysseas Vlachodimos into a sharp save following a swift counter-attack involving Aspas.

Sevilla showed glimpses of promise going forward but struggled with their final pass throughout the first half. They also felt aggrieved when appeals for a penalty were waved away after Carl Starfelt’s challenge on Kike Salas. At the other end, Javi Rodríguez tested Vlachodimos with a tame effort that the goalkeeper gathered comfortably, leaving Celta — who began the night three points adrift of sixth-placed Real Betis — marginally the more frustrated side at the interval.

The lack of quality persisted into the early stages of the second half, prompting both managers to make double substitutions. Notably, Alexis Sánchez was introduced for Sevilla, while former Betis striker Borja Iglesias emerged from the Celta bench to a mixed reception from the home crowd.

Tensions rose soon after as the Sevilla supporters voiced their displeasure at the officials, believing Óscar Mingueza had fouled Lucien Agoumé, but their protests were ignored. The hosts then suffered a further setback when Rubén Vargas, introduced less than 10 minutes earlier, was forced off injured in tears, with Adnan Januzaj replacing him.

Celta finished the match strongly. Williot Swedberg fired straight at Vlachodimos after being picked out by a delightful scooped pass from Marcos Alonso, before the Sevilla goalkeeper produced an outstanding double save to deny Swedberg again and Moriba.

However, Sevilla’s resistance was finally broken late on. Oso was penalised for stepping on Moriba’s foot inside the area, allowing Alonso to step up and calmly convert the resulting penalty, sealing a dramatic late victory for Celta and deepening Sevilla’s woes.
