Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has issued an apology for his touchline behaviour during his side’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final defeat to Real Madrid in Saudi Arabia, admitting fault for taunting Vinícius Júnior while stopping short of asking for forgiveness.

The Argentine was caught on camera repeatedly provoking the Real Madrid winger throughout the match. He was reportedly heard telling Vinícius, “Florentino will kick you out — remember what I’m telling you,” a remark linked to ongoing speculation surrounding the Brazilian’s future and contract situation.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday ahead of Atlético’s Copa del Rey last-16 clash with Deportivo La Coruña, Simeone addressed the incident.

“I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and Mr Vinícius for the situation they experienced,” Simeone said. “It was wrong of me to put myself in that position, and I accept that mistake. The team that wins deserves to go through, and they deserved it.”

When asked whether his actions crossed the line, Simeone remained firm.

“I apologise, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have nothing more to add,” he said.

The controversy intensified when Vinícius was substituted in the second half amid loud boos from sections of the crowd. As the winger — who is currently on a 19-match goal drought — made his way off the pitch, a smiling Simeone gestured toward the stands and urged the crowd to “listen, listen.”

Real Madrid went on to secure a 2–1 victory to reach the final, where they were later beaten 3–2 by Barcelona. Vinícius scored a spectacular goal in the final despite the defeat.

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso criticised Simeone’s conduct, saying, “It was not an example of good sportsmanship.”

Atlético Madrid currently sit fourth in LaLiga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona.
