Ħamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli has announced that he has completed the acquisition of an Italian club competing in the Eccellenza championship, although he stopped short of officially revealing its identity.

Speaking during the club’s Annual General Meeting, Portelli disclosed that the investment amounted to €2 million. He also confirmed that Malta internationals Henry Bonello and Joseph Mbong are set to leave the reigning Maltese champions ahead of the new season.

Portelli has been pursuing the purchase of an Italian club for several months. Earlier this year, his bid to acquire Italian Serie D side Siena 1904 was unsuccessful, while advanced negotiations to take over Nocerina Calcio ultimately collapsed following the due diligence process.

Addressing supporters, Portelli confirmed that he has now completed a deal for an Italian club, describing it as a project that will benefit both the club and Maltese football.

“I have acquired a club in Italy,” Portelli said. “The deal has cost me €2 million, so it is certainly not a small investment. However, the club has a great tradition and, until a few years ago, it was competing in Serie A.

“The club enjoys tremendous support, attracting around 6,000 fans to its home matches. This project will help us become an even stronger team because I intend to guide the club up the Italian football pyramid. Once it reaches Serie C, it can provide opportunities for Maltese players to showcase their talent in Italy.

“At the same time, having a presence in Italian football will help us attract higher-quality foreign players who can strengthen our squad for European competitions.”

Although Portelli declined to identify the club, information emerging in recent weeks suggests that the acquisition is believed to involve Ferrara Calcio Ars et Labor, the club formerly known as SPAL Calcio.

The Ferrara-based club boasts a rich history and a strong fan base, having competed in Italy’s top flight as recently as 2020. Last season, they reached the promotion play-offs in the Eccellenza championship but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Santegidiese, meaning they will remain in the division for the upcoming campaign.

Turning his attention to Ħamrun Spartans’ preparations for the new season, Portelli confirmed that head coach Giacomo Modica will remain in charge, at least for the opening phase of the campaign.

“Coach Giacomo Modica will be leading the team when pre-season training begins next week,” Portelli said.
