Maltese Clubs Discover Potential European Routes in UEFA Second Qualifying Round Draws

Maltese clubs learned their potential opponents in the next stage of UEFA competition following the Second Qualifying Round draws held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
The draw followed Tuesday’s First Qualifying Round ceremony, which saw Floriana paired with Irish champions Shamrock Rovers in the UEFA Champions League, while Marsaxlokk were drawn against Armenia’s FC Pyunik and Hamrun Spartans against Faroese side NSÍ Runavík in the UEFA Conference League.
Meridianbet FA Trophy holders Valletta, meanwhile, entered directly into the Second Qualifying Round of the UEFA Conference League and discovered a challenging assignment against Polish side Raków Częstochowa.
Floriana Learn Potential Champions League Opponents
Should Floriana overcome Shamrock Rovers in the First Qualifying Round of the UEFA Champions League, they will face either Armenian club FC Ararat-Armenia or Latvian champions Riga FC in the next stage of the competition.
The Second Qualifying Round ties are scheduled to be played over two legs on 21/22 July and 28/29 July.
While Floriana’s immediate focus remains on Shamrock Rovers, the draw has already mapped out a possible route deeper into Europe’s premier club competition.
The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign will conclude with the final at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano on 5 June 2027.
Conference League Scenarios Confirmed
The draw also clarified the possible paths for Malta’s representatives in the UEFA Conference League.
Should Floriana be eliminated by Shamrock Rovers in the Champions League, they will drop into the Conference League and face the losing side from the First Qualifying Round tie between Lithuania’s FK Kauno Žalgiris and Kosovo’s FC Drita.
Valletta, who secured European qualification by lifting the Meridianbet FA Trophy last season, were handed one of the toughest available draws and will face Polish outfit Raków Częstochowa in the Second Qualifying Round.
Marsaxlokk will also have a difficult task awaiting them should they progress past FC Pyunik. Victory over the Armenian side would set up a clash against Hungary’s Debreceni VSC.
Hamrun Spartans, meanwhile, will meet Slovenian club FC Koper if they successfully negotiate their First Qualifying Round encounter against NSÍ Runavík.
The UEFA Conference League Second Qualifying Round ties are scheduled for 23 and 30 July.
The competition’s final will be played at Beşiktaş Park in Istanbul on 2 June 2027.
With the draws now complete, Malta’s four European representatives have a clearer picture of the challenges that lie ahead as they prepare to begin their continental campaigns next month.
