Brazil face stern test from in-form Morocco in World Cup opener

Brazil begin their quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title with one of the most intriguing opening fixtures of the tournament as they take on Morocco in a heavyweight Group C clash in New Jersey.
The Seleção arrive at the tournament in encouraging form, having recorded three consecutive victories in their pre-World Cup friendlies while scoring an impressive 11 goals. Their attacking firepower has reinforced their status as one of the leading contenders for global glory, and they will be eager to make a strong start against a side that has emerged as one of international football’s most consistent performers.
Brazil also have fond memories of North America, having lifted the World Cup the last time the United States hosted the competition in 1994. While they have reached the semi-finals only once since their triumph in 2002, their remarkable World Cup pedigree remains unmatched. No nation has played more World Cup matches than Brazil (114), and no team has recorded more victories (76), underlining why they enter this fixture as favourites.
Morocco, however, are unlikely to be overawed. The Atlas Lions captured the imagination of football fans around the world during the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals. Far from being a one-off achievement, they have continued their upward trajectory, winning all eight of their World Cup qualifying matches before going on to lift the Arab Cup and reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Since securing continental honours earlier this year, Morocco have remained unbeaten in five friendly matches, recording three wins and two draws. Their latest outing saw them earn a credible 1-1 draw against Norway, further highlighting the confidence and momentum within Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad.
The head-to-head record slightly favours Brazil, who have won two of the three previous meetings between the nations, including a World Cup group-stage encounter in 1998. However, Morocco claimed the most recent meeting, recording a memorable 2-1 victory in a friendly in 2023.
Several statistics point towards a tightly contested affair. Brazil are unbeaten in their last 20 World Cup opening matches, winning 17 and drawing three. Meanwhile, Morocco have developed a reputation for defensive resilience, keeping a first-half clean sheet in each of their last 24 matches. The Atlas Lions have never won their opening match at a World Cup, however, drawing three and losing three of their previous six tournament openers.
Brazil’s attacking hopes will once again rest heavily on Vinícius Júnior. The Real Madrid forward has contributed three goals and assists across his last three appearances for club and country, with two of his last three international goals opening the scoring. Morocco will look to Brahim Díaz for inspiration, with the midfielder recording three goal involvements in his last five appearances, including the opening goal against Norway.
Brazil have received a boost with reports suggesting Neymar is making good progress in his recovery from a calf injury and could be available. Morocco, meanwhile, have injury concerns, with Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli ruled out after returning home injured, while Noussair Mazraoui remains doubtful following an injury sustained against Norway.
Prediction
With both sides ranked among the top ten teams in the world, this promises to be one of the most competitive fixtures of the opening round. Morocco’s defensive organisation and excellent recent form should make life difficult for Brazil, particularly in the early stages.
However, Brazil’s superior attacking depth and experience on the biggest stage could prove decisive as the match progresses.
Prediction: Brazil 2-1 Morocco
Betting Tip: Half-Time Draw.
