Cristiano Ronaldo said on Friday that he is feeling “very positive” ahead of Portugal’s departure from Lisbon for their World Cup base camp in Palm Beach, Florida.

“We’re approaching this competition with a lot of hope,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The Portugal captain said preparations had gone well, even if they were demanding due to the intensity of training.

The preparation has been very good, tiring because we have worked hard,” he said, adding that he feels “physically good”.

“I am very positive, I believe things will go well and that we will put in a good performance.”

He also praised Portugal’s current squad, calling it a strong generation capable of delivering success for the country.

“It’s a very good generation… which will bring a lot of joy to the Portuguese people,” Ronaldo said.

Looking ahead to the tournament, he stressed the importance of a strong start in the group stage.

“The most important thing is to start well, with the first match, then follow up with the second and third… finish top of the group and from there, take it one match at a time.”

Portugal begin their World Cup campaign on June 17 in Houston against the Democratic Republic of Congo, before also facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to feature in a record sixth World Cup appearance, although some have raised concerns that his involvement could impact Roberto Martínez’s team balance and overall fluidity.

Portugal recently played two warm-up matches against Chile and Nigeria, winning both 2-1, but Ronaldo did not find the net in either game.

Historically, Portugal’s best World Cup finish came in 1966 when they placed third, while their most recent strong run saw them reach the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago.
