Quiñones and Jiménez Power Mexico Past South Africa in World Cup Opener

Co-hosts Mexico kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign in style, securing a dominant 2-0 victory over South Africa amid an electric atmosphere at the Mexico City Stadium. A starring performance from Julián Quiñones and a milestone appearance by teenager Gilberto Mora ensured Javier Aguirre’s side took maximum points to top Group A.
Lightning Fast Start
El Tri needed less than five minutes to signal their intent. Israel Reyes delivered a sharp cross from the right, finding Raúl Jiménez, whose powerful bouncing effort forced a smart tip-around-the-post from Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The deadlock did not last long. Moments later, Érik Lira aggressively dispossessed Sphephelo Sithole, allowing Quiñones to seize the ball and drill a clinical finish through the legs of Williams from just inside the penalty box.
South Africa survived a first-half onslaught to head into the break only one goal down. Williams pulled off a superb save from a Jiménez header, and the woodwork denied Quiñones a second.
Red Cards and Tactical Masters
The second half began disastrously for South Africa. Jiménez raced through on goal and was hauled down on the edge of the box by Sithole. The referee showed no hesitation, issuing a straight red card to the South African midfielder.
With the visitors down to ten men, the home crowd—including Mexican boxing icon Canelo Álvarez—erupted as 17-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora was introduced to the pitch. Within 60 seconds of the substitution, Mexico doubled their lead. Quiñones played a slick one-two with Jiménez before feeding Roberto Alvarado, whose dangerous cross was expertly nodded home at the back post by Jiménez.
The match ended in disciplinary chaos as South Africa substitute Themba Zwane and Mexico centre-back César Montes were both sent off in the closing stages. Despite the late red card, Mexico comfortably managed the final whistle to secure the win.
History Made
By coming off the bench, midfielder Gilberto Mora made global football history. At 17 years and 240 days, he became the sixth-youngest player to ever feature in a FIFA World Cup, trailing only Norman Whiteside, Samuel Eto’o, Femi Opabunmi, Salomon Olembe, and Pelé.
