El Tri aim for strong World Cup start on home soil

For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, the tournament’s opening match is a repeat fixture from a previous edition, as Mexico and South Africa renew acquaintances exactly 16 years after their 1-1 draw in Johannesburg at the 2010 World Cup.
Match News and Current Form
Mexico may hold the unwanted record for the most World Cup matches played without ever lifting the trophy (60), but they arrive at the 2026 tournament as favourites to top Group A. A strong start has become a hallmark of El Tri’s World Cup campaigns, with the hosts unbeaten in their last seven tournament openers since 1994 (W5, D2).
Javier Aguirre’s side head into the competition in excellent form, winning six of their previous eight matches (D2). Their defensive resilience has been particularly impressive, with six clean sheets recorded during that run, while they have also scored 15 goals. Backed by a passionate home crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca, expectations will be high ahead of this eagerly anticipated curtain-raiser.
South Africa, meanwhile, are making their fourth World Cup appearance and their first since hosting the tournament in 2010. Hugo Broos’ men arrive in North America with ambitions of reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
However, recent form has been less encouraging. Bafana Bafana have managed just three draws and two defeats from their last five matches, representing a noticeable dip after topping their World Cup qualifying group ahead of Nigeria. Defensive organisation was key to that qualification success, with South Africa trailing in only one of their ten qualifying fixtures, and Broos will be hoping his side can rediscover that solidity here.
Head-to-Head
After winning their first two meetings with South Africa, Mexico are now winless in the last two encounters between the nations (D1, L1).
Key Stats
- Mexico are unbeaten in all seven of their World Cup matches played at the Estadio Azteca (W5, D2).
- El Tri have led at half-time in five of their last six matches.
- None of South Africa’s nine World Cup matches have ended goalless.
- Both teams have scored in five of South Africa’s last six fixtures.
Players to Watch
Defender Johan Vásquez has enjoyed a remarkable goalscoring run, finding the net three times across his last three appearances for club and country, including twice opening the scoring for Mexico.
For South Africa, Oswin Appollis could prove pivotal. The winger was directly involved in six goals during qualifying (G2, A4), twice as many as any of his team-mates.
Both sides appear to have come through their final warm-up matches without any fresh injury concerns.
Betting Analysis
Mexico’s recent form, defensive strength and home advantage make them clear favourites to begin their World Cup campaign with a victory. The hosts have looked sharp in both boxes and should be capable of creating plenty of chances against a South African side that has struggled for consistency in recent months.
Best Bet: Mexico to win & Over 1.5 Mexico team goals
Given Mexico’s impressive attacking output and South Africa’s recent defensive vulnerabilities, backing El Tri to claim all three points while scoring at least twice looks a sensible selection for the tournament opener.
